One of the hardest parts of practicing dentistry for many years is saying goodbye to the people who helped shape both our profession and our careers. Recently, dentistry lost one of its true giants with the passing of Dr. Byoung In Suh.
I first met Byoung in the 1990s, and over the decades I came to consider him not only a mentor but also a dear friend. Like many clinicians, I learned more about adhesion dentistry from him than from anyone else in our profession. What made him unique was not just his knowledge of chemistry and bonding protocols, but his ability to simplify complex concepts so that everyday practicing dentists could understand and apply them with confidence.
He was also incredibly generous with his time and knowledge. He lectured in my office, shared educational materials freely, and helped countless dentists become better clinicians. Many of us who lecture and teach today owe a tremendous debt to him. His influence can still be seen every day in adhesive dentistry and restorative protocols around the world.
As we reflect on his legacy in this year’s technology issue, I think it is important to remember that technology alone does not move dentistry forward. The people behind the technology matter just as much. The best innovations are driven by science, integrity, and a genuine desire to improve patient care.
After more than 40 years in practice, I continue to be amazed by how quickly dentistry evolves. Digital workflows, CBCT integration, facial scanning, and in-office printing are changing the way we diagnose, treatment plan, and deliver care. I was once skeptical of fully digital workflows, particularly for full-arch implant cases, but today they have become an essential part of my practice because they improve efficiency, predictability, and communication.
This issue highlights many of those advances while keeping the focus where it belongs: on practical solutions that clinicians can use every day. Whether you are fully digital or just beginning to incorporate new technology into your workflow, I believe you will find valuable insights throughout these pages.
